Mrs. Coley Mack Washington will be celebrating her 100th birthday. She was born September 26, 1918 in Columbia, the ninth of fourteen children born to Marshall and Louisa Mack. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. After getting married and raising three children, she enrolled in Allen University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1955. She received additional training at Winthrop University and the University of South Carolina.
Mrs. Washington was a teacher in Columbia and Hopkins, SC. She was the first person to open a privately-owned day care facility in Gadsden, SC. She also served as the director of the Midlands Head Start Program, where she remained until her retirement.
Mrs. Washington is a member of Rock Hill AME Church, the NAACP, and the Allen University Alumni Association.
Washington was married to the late James Washington Sr. until his untimely death in 1984.
