Denmark Technical College (DTC) has four new “Panthers” for fall 2019! Denmark-Olar High School’s Horace Sapp and Tony Nimmons, and Blackville-Hilda High School’s Tamra Williams and Natalia Jennings indicated their intentions to enroll during the Denmark Technical College Academic Signing Day events held on May 31, 2019. All four students began their college careers while enrolled in high school as participants of the Denmark Technical College Dual Enrollment Program. The DTC Dual Enrollment Program allows high school students to earn academic credit for the completion of courses that simultaneously meet high school and college graduation requirements at no cost to the student. Participation in the Program allowed Tony Nimmons and Natalia Jennings to complete requirements to earn a Certificate in General Studies from the College. Mr. Nimmons and Ms. Jennings degrees were conferred during the Denmark Technical College Graduation Exercises held on May 3, 2019.

The Dual Enrollment Program at DTC offers college credit classes to qualified high school students in the Allendale, Bamberg, and Barnwell school districts. High school students taking courses for dual credit are required to enroll in a minimum of two classes to earn at least six semester hours of credit each semester. Funds generated through the South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance program are used to cover the cost of tuition for students in the Dual Enrollment Program. It has been shown that in most cases, students who are able to earn college credit while in high school have fewer student loans and graduate at higher rates than students who do not earn college credit while in high school.

While enrolled with Denmark Tech, Horace Sapp and Tony Nimmons will both major in Welding, an area of high demand across South Carolina because of the number of industries looking to hire certified welders in the fields of construction, fabrication and manufacturing. Natalia Jennings plans to enroll in the Applied Science in Criminal Justice Program and Tamra Williams will pursue a Diploma in Cosmetology.

Denmark Technical College offers the Dual Enrollment Program year round. It is not too late to register for the summer. Summer registration runs June 17-21, 2019, with classes starting June 24 and ending July 27, 2019. Classes are available on the main campus of DTC, at the Allendale and Barnwell sites and online. To enroll a high school student, or for more information, please contact Dual Enrollment Counselors Doris Beard (803-793-5206) or Robert Peacock (803-793-5280).
