The National Pan-Hellenic Council at Columbia closed out the year with it’s 33rd annual scholarship program. This program was created to celebrate local students for academic achievements, and continues as an avenue for Midlands chapters of black Greek letter organizations to give back to the community.

The fourteen chapters, the NPHC at Columbia, and the Divine Nine Foundation of Columbia (SC), Incorporated gave a combined $411,844 in scholarships to 144 high school and college students.

Through a partnership with the Black Expo, the Council began giving two annual scholarships. This year is particularly special because the Council awarded the two scholarships in the names of two long standing members, Mazie G. Lewis (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated) and the late Timothy Jerome Grant (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated). Lewis and Grant both exemplify the principles of their respective organizations and the NPHC.

They both embody what it truly means to be selfless and kind. They always demonstrated support for each organization and was always willing to help those in need.

“Hellen Keller said it best ‘I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot DO everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do EVERYTHING, I will not refuse to do something that I can do',” Council President Dr. Theo Oates, III said.

A newly established non-profit organization, the Divine Nine Foundation of Columbia (SC) Incorporated, gave out the Sabrina Brown Scholarship. This scholarship created in the memory of Sabrina Brown (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated), brings awareness to heart health in the African American community. The scholarship is funded by the Official Greek Explosion, which brings NPHC organizations, community organizations and community members together. It serves a dual purpose, to inform citizens of various resources and fellowship with one another.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council was founded on May 10, 1930. It is comprised of nine organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Iota Phi Theta, Fraternity, Inc.
