The Columbia, SC Branch of the NAACP congratulates the members of the House of Representatives specifically Representative Wendell G. Gilliard and our Richland County, Columbia SC House Representatives: Ivory Thigpen, Leon Howard, Annie E. McDaniel, Kambrell Garvin, Heather Bauer, Chris Hart, Beth Bernstein, Jermaine Johnson, and Todd Rutherford.
We thank you for your persistence in seeing that the Clementa C. Pinkney Hate Crime Act H-3014 was passed last week. We stand with you and applaud this momentous decision to enact penalties for deliberate actions based on the facts that “determines beyond a reasonable doubt that the offense was committed against a victim who was intentionally selected, in whole or in part, because of the person's belief or perception regarding the victim's race, color, religion, sex, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical or mental disability, whether or not the perception is correct, the person is subject to additional penalties as provided in subsection (B).”
We strongly encourage the Senate and Governor McMaster to pass this bill and pass it now! This bill is long overdue and the community climate of today demands that we move forward swiftly and intentionally.
Again, congratulations from the Columbia, SC Branch of the NAACP to all of you who presented and passed this Act!
President, L. Oveta Glover
